CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT
LORD RAVENMERE WALKED swiftly through the busy early evening London streets. Although it was a short journey from the House of Lords to his exclusive gentlemanâs club, his eyes darted nervously at passers-by. Things had gotten out of control. Not only was he worried about the incriminating information that was still out there, heâd lost favour with the chairmanâand with the fate of Cheng Haku still fresh in his mind, it was not a position he wanted to be in for long. He climbed the steps and entered the foyer of the centuries-old club to be met by the concierge.
âGood evening, Lord Ravenmere, may I take your coat, sir?â
âThank you, Albert,â said Hubert, already feeling more secure in familiar surroundings.
âYour guest is already here, sir, heâs sitting in your usual booth in the Green Room,â said Albert handing the coat to a minion to be whisked away to the cloakroom.
Albert escorted Hubert through the oak-clad rooms, past the soft Chesterfield leather sofas and secretive, high-backed, leather booths where centuries of powerful men and politicians had made their deals and collaborations that made the country tick through the ages. Albert entered the Green Room and stood to one side to let Hubert sit down next to his guest.
âYour usual, sir?â
âYes please, Albert.â
âAnd another for your guest?â said Albert gesturing his white gloved hand to Michael Davis.
âEr, yes. Thank you.â
âWill you gentlemen be dining with us tonight?â
Hubert looked at Davis, who nodded in agreement.
âVery good, sir, shall we say eight oâclock?â Albert said as another minion appeared with the drinks and then disappeared with the same silent smoothness heâd arrived with.
âYes, thank you, Albert, that will be all,â said Hubert, waving Albert off in the manner of expected service rather than an appreciated one.
Hubertâs eyes followed Albert until he was out of sight and earshot, then turned their focus front and centre on Davis.
âMichael, please tell me you have something,â he said sounding a little more desperate than he intended to.
âAs a matter of fact I do. The hospital job was too organised, planned and clinical, too much like one of our jobs. So Iâve had men looking at internal irregularities. Turns out one of our own has been taking a big interest in some of our arrangements. It also turns out heâs been away from his desk since the hospital job. The investigation stated in his log is completely bogus.â Davis spoke with a calm confidence that started to make Hubert feel more relaxed.
âWho is it, Michael?â
âOne of my senior agents, Edward Jenkins. I pulled his file and it appears heâs worked with Howardâs boy, Daniel Pearson, and Howardâs annoying ex-military intelligence buddy, Paul Greenwood.â
âBrilliant, whatâs the plan?â said Hubert, suddenly excited at the prospect of fixing the mess he was in and returning to favour with the chairman.
âI suggest we get the Chinaman and our remaining asset to scope out his house. Heâll turn up there or at the office soon enough. Weâll track him back to Pearson and
